Museum Outing
The trip to the museum was mediocre at best. It was interesting seeing the plethora of pop culture references on display and the vintage moving image toys but other than that I didn't see anything too inspiring. The most intriguing thing at the museum was the machine that displayed what looked like water balloons becoming footballs becoming something else, and that mechanism was never explained so I'd still want to know more. Other than that, the modern media section wasn't as interesting as people hyped it up to be. It showed mostly things I had seen before and didn't really explain anything besides this day and age being the greatest time to create media using your own platform which most people already know. The set and costume design were both things I could appreciate but not something I was inherently interested in. The tour itself seemed to be more forcibly interactive and felt a little lackluster but I appreciate the level of appreciation the tour guides had for their career and the subjects of the tour. Many of the retro theaters and arcade consoles gave the museum a sense that it was misplaced in time. The tour guide described how the theaters were built to resemble "exotic lands" such as the Egyptian themed one in the museum. They created a sense of escapism that many theaters no longer have because that kind of escapism has become part of our daily lives. It's interesting to see not only the history of the moving image but the impact that an ever expanding media sector has on our daily lives. The once prevailing theme of escapism has become white noise for us, a part of our everyday experience. 6/10 Overall.
